Big Hurricane Windows with Minimal Frames: It’s Possible — With the Right System

One of the biggest design challenges in coastal architecture is balancing large-format glass with minimal framing, all while meeting hurricane impact requirements. It’s also one of my favorite problems to solve.

Coordinating the right combination of hurricane-rated systems — often from two, three, or even four different manufacturers — can deliver massive glass with the thinnest frames and the fewest structural interruptions. That’s how you achieve the architectural intent without defaulting to heavy support mullions or clunky workarounds.

Stair towers, multi-story feature walls, and glass corners often push the limits of engineering and testing. Most window companies will offer the path of least resistance (and cost), producing something that “resembles” the design intent — but falls short of delivering it. That’s where specialty coordination matters most.
